Debunking “Differences”

“I Told You So!”

Hindsight is 20/20, I thought it’d be funny to look back at a “leak” claiming to describe the Snyder Cut from November 18, 2017.

With the release and reception of Zack Snyder’s Justice League there is much cause for celebration, gratitude, and congratulations. There’s also a baser instinct to go after those who didn’t believe along the way; An incredible temptation to unleash a torrent of “I told you so!” For my part, I’ve recommend amnesty because they can only add to our support. If there’s a message in the movie, the movement, and the marketing, it’s “Us United.”

And yet, I still have to say, “I told you so” not to detractors, but to adherents who had bought into a rumor spread wide around the web during the early days of the Snyder Cut; before it had become a hashtag! In December 1, 2017, I published the provocatively titled Don’t Be As Gullible As Kevin Smith. The contents actually praise Smith’s support of DC and only mildly chastise him for multiplying the reach of a rumor, the contents of which were where my grievance actually was. Dubbed “Differences”, it was supposedly a bulleted list of 21 differences between the theatrical Justice League and Snyder’s unseen film; posted anonymously to Reddit by an alleged insider.

To me, it was immediately obviously a fake, filled with contradictions and lacking the ring of truth… but it spread to mainstream pop-culture sites and two-weeks later Kevin Smith was reading from the list on his podcast reaching hundreds of thousands of viewers. The post was imploring people to ask for the real thing, not this fabrication. Thank goodness the movement was bigger than this and never adopted it as true (though there continued to be those here and there that would insist upon its truth) and so the integrity of what we were asking for was preserved.

With the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the surrounding promotional interviews, it’s clear what the film is, what it was, and what it was not during the grueling 7-month process to finish the film for release, $70M and 2656 visual-effects-shots later. This is a reminder to be humble in what we think we know, before we attack and ask for heads to roll.

Again, thank goodness this didn’t develop real traction otherwise it would have given executives every excuse to say, “Look, the fans don’t want the Snyder Cut, they want this thing… and this proves they don’t know what they’re talking about because this thing isn’t the Snyder Cut!”; discrediting the cut and the fans. But perfection is the enemy of good and fortunately we had the benefit of Smith’s support which extended to the premiere of Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

“Snyder’s vision asks us to examine our contributions to the stories we engage with . . . Stand. Fight. Discover. Heal. Love. Win.”

Remember this feeling.

Today is V-Day for a hope long held… a battle long fought.

Rarely do we see persistence pay off for dreamers against the system, common sense, and naysayers.  So this is a miracle.  The planets aligned.  Providence smiling.  Time to rejoice!

Yet it is impossible to maintain our present elation.  And with victory it is easy to become accustomed, take for granted, and let this sense of the miraculous slip away.  And while the outcome is assured, it’s all too easy to stumble before the finish line.  To forget the miracle and this feeling.

Five twenty.

Remember this feeling… for this and the other journeys of your life

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is the tree of life

The purpose is to cover costs. After 5 years, it’s time to renew hosting and the fundraiser will determine what package and terms I can commit to.

I use libraries, free software, and budget hardware. I lost video editing software license with a machine crash, but haven’t replaced it. Other things add up like storage, research materials, time, etc. However, this fundraiser is solely for hosting.

I appreciate any help you can give.  Thank you!

Randomly Related Slightly Salient Stuff 19

Today is Superman Day as declared by DC Comics in honor of the cover date of Action Comics #1 falling in June despite actual release date being April 18th, 1938.  We are slightly co-opting the date for Man of Steel (I say “slightly” because it was originally “Man of Steel Day” before being changed to “Superman Day”) because it’s close enough to the release of Man of Steel.  As much as I like precision and accuracy, I also value grace and accommodation, which is why I point out DC initially acknowledging a cover date in addition to a release date.  So however you term it or celebrate, Happy Man Of Steel Day!

Anyways, too busy to ramble… let me just throw a few things that have come across my radar or research recently:

Randomly Related Slightly Salient Stuff 18

The audio is recorded but I’m still trying to “find the episode” in it.  I’ve tried 3 different assembly cuts which are different degrees of disappointing.  It’s only after I get an arrangement I like do I do the detailed edits, add in clips, and prepare notes for my endnotes recording session (where I record the intro, transitions, and endnotes).  I tried to get the episode out in September (and beat the next trailer) but I’m not going to make it.  We’re attending a birthday and a wedding this weekend and Comic Con next weekend, so I’m not sure when this is going to get done.

No time to editorialize or explain the following links, I promise they’re all slightly salient somewhere in the recesses of my mind.

Episode 56: Espionage.  Steve Trevor the spy, Amanda Waller the intelligence officer, Anatoli Knayzev the KGBeast in a CIA op gone wrong, and Clark Kent raised undercover.

You know the drill by now.  This is where I tell you that there’s no new episode yet because of everything else going on.  [We have a girl! 7lbs 11.6oz!]

Here and there, I have been chipping away at an episode recorded before Wonder Woman.  The original theme was “decision making” on who Clark consults in Man of Steel (and who he doesn’t) and BvS… then loosely tied that to the lack of communication in the Trinity fight.  I made the decision to split out the Doomsday fight and both parts became thematically stronger.  One episode on seeking counsel and a Doomsday fight analysis.  The latter made more martial, I started to weave in some insights from martial history and philosophy which made it balloon again!  The whole point was to cut down the episode to reduce production… not to double the ideas and effort!

Unfortunately, looking at my next few weeks, I literally don’t know when I’ll have time to work on any of this to a publishable state.  That said, I’d like to get in an informal SDCC reaction if possible, maybe padding it out with unanswered listener questions still sitting in my notes.  So hopefully see you in about a week!

Some RRSSS for your consideration:
