Happy 2018, Doc. Although I do have a question, a sort of negative feedback: Looking back at your show so far, is there any good reason why you just have to edit soundbites from films so tightly that what would have been a single stream of conversation jumps and skips like it’s hiccuping because you shaved off the pauses in between lines? Lots of people (myself included, heck, I’ll bet even you too) memorize films we love in audio form, playing it again and again in our heads. Why do that to the audio?
Pretty much because I’m an amateur editor not fully capable of doing everything I want with audio. If I were more conscientious, I might keep them in, but realistically, I have to re-rip every clip every time I do it, so it’s done on the fly, fast, and sloppy each time. I’m processing something like 35-60 clips per episode so I just run them all through the same clipping algorithm to have any hope of processing it all, no time to make exceptions for in-film audio.
That said, it also isn’t the telos of my audio to be enjoyed in-the-moment… I mean, that’s a slippery slope. Why mono instead of stereo, why 128 kbs and not 512, etc? The main usage of clips is to: 1) Recall authority (I often make quotes that go over people’s heads as being from the films unless I play the audio direct); 2) Give you a break from my voice (because otherwise I’m reading the quote)… so, unfortunately for your tastes, even the clipped audio fulfills these purposes for me.
Anyways, that’s the reason!
I’m not “complaining” about the sound quality so much as about it being cut up and restrung together shorter (remember the political cartoon of Nixon trying to duct tape “not” in the middle of the cassette tape saying “I am a crook.”? (https://www.loc.gov/exhibits/herblocks-history/images/hblock11.jpg) For example, when your intro strings all those lines from Man Of Steel with the word QUESTION in them, I’ve no problem listening because they were never played in that close succession in the film anyway. But when it’s a continuous part from a film but with the pauses cut short, the listening dissonance comes it. 🙁 I thought you did it to save running time for your episodes, but now it seems that it’s just a thing that happens when you rip the audios from its video source…? I use online converters to rip audios off of youtube clips (after being inspired by your episode 20 with the BvS Teaser) and it doesn’t get shortened. Well… if it’s just the way results are produced with your available software, then I’ll say no more.
Such a shame that Justice League has killed your wonderful site and insights Doc. We all had a good run here for a while
